IN this picture from 1982, two market stall holders were set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Burnley Market.
Edith and Alan Metcalfe dressed in the thirties style as they manned their stall with china cups and plates during the celebratory weekend held to mark the special anniversary.
The town received its markets charter in the late 13th century and it was held round the market cross in Church Street, near St Peter’s Church, for more than 500 years.
The Metcalfe stall sold a variety of household objects, including beautiful mirrors, cutlery and china cups and plates. Today, the market in Burnley is host to stalls with goods from all over the world.
There are food stalls with delicacies from India and China, and gift stores with greeting cards and many gift ideas.
