A WESTGATE restaurant specialising in Indian street food has added fundraising to its repertoire after pulling in £20,000 for charity.

Oxford’s specialist cancer centre at the Churchill Hospital will be welcoming a cash boost thanks to Mowgli and its customers.

The restaurant, on the terrace level of the Westgate Centre, has been urging customers for almost a year to add £1 to their bills for a local good cause.

The chain, which has eight restaurants across the country with two more soon to open, said it likes to chose a local charity to support in each area.

In Oxford, the team picked Oxford Hospitals Charity and had a special interest in supporting cancer treatment.

This means that the thousands of pounds already raised by the Westgate branch will be donated to the Oxford Cancer Centre at Churchill Hospital to support those going through cancer treatment.

Nisha Katona, founder of Mowgli Street Food, said: “Mowgli is about more than just good food, it’s about enriching the lives of the cities we go to.

“Our Oxford team are proud to support Oxford Hospitals Charity and over £20,000 raised so far is incredible.

“This will make such a difference to thousands of cancer patients looked after in the Churchill Hospital from across Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties.”

The Indian Street food restaurant asks customers to add a discretionary £1 to their table’s bill, which is donated to Oxford Hospitals Charity and gradually month on month it has grown to more than £20,000 in less than a year.

Oxford Hospitals Charity CEO Douglas Graham said: “Mowgli Street Food like to choose a local charity for their restaurants and are particularly keen to support cancer causes.

“We met with them just before they moved to the Westgate, and were delighted they chose to support our Cancer Care Fund at the Churchill Hospital.

“What’s amazing is how very simple their method of support is, and how quickly it adds up. Customers are asked to pay just £1 on each table’s bill and in under a year this has added up to an incredible £20,000.

“We are thrilled too that this support is continuing – so even more local cancer patients will benefit.

“The Mowgli team have visited the Cancer Centre at the Churchill and met with some of our amazing staff to see first hand how donations make a real difference at the hospital.

“It’s a very special partnership indeed.”
