A HEATWAVE is set to hit Oxfordshire this week, bringing temperatures that could top that of sizzling summer holiday destinations. 

According to both the Met Office and the BBC forecasts, the county could see highs of up to 33C tomorrow.

The Met Office forecast for Benson this week

Today should see balmy temperatures in the high 20s, but Tuesday and Thursday should be the hottest of the week.

Oxford is forecast highs of 31 on both days, while other areas of the county, including Abingdon and Benson, are predicted up to 33 degrees.

By comparison, the popular holiday island of Ibiza will only reach 31 degrees.

The Met Office has warned of high pollen and UV levels across England.

The mercury needs to hit 27Cin Oxfordshire for three consecutive days, to be classed as a heatwave.

The maximum temperature recorded in July in the UK is 36.7C, on the first day of the month in 2015 at Heathrow.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Met Office expects temperatures to fall.

A forecaster said: "There's some uncertainty on just how long the heatwave conditions will last for. 

"It looks most likely that, at least by Saturday, most areas will see a bit of a drop in temperatures.

"There's still a lot of sunshine around for the weekend and temperatures probably look to be not quite as hot, but with a summery feel staying for the weekend."
