OXFORD’S eco-friendly credentials have received another boost after a survey said it tops the list outside London for having the highest percentage of pure electric cars.

Insurers Admiral said of all electric car models (both battery-only and hybrid) registered in Oxford, 36 per cent of them are powered purely on electricity.

According to Admiral’s survey, Oxford sits above the Southern average which has an EV increase of 113 per cent over the same period of time, and also the nationwide average of 95 per cent.

Oxford Mail:

Cambridge, by comparison, has seen a 102 per cent increase in EVs and 34 per cent of its electric cars are battery-only models.

Further highlighting Oxford’s commitment to a green future, the city has the second highest number of cyclists of UK cities, according to the Department for Transport.

The Admiral survey is the latest evidence that electric vehicle use in the city is growing steadily.

Oxford Mail:

Oxford’s branch of the car-sharing club Co-wheels has bought 10 new electric BMWs which can be used on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The electric BMW i3s have been added to the fleet and some of the club’s existing parking bays around the city have now been switched from ‘petrol’ to ‘electric’, but it has also added several new on-street parking spots in Jericho and West Oxford just for electric vehicles.
