STREET cleaning in West Oxfordshire could become much greener after the district council began trialling a state-of-the-art sweeper.

The machine is very similar to the existing four-strong fleet, but is powered by lithium ion batteries rather than diesel.

This would make street cleaning in the district emissions-free, as part of West Oxfordshire District Council's drive to become more environmentally-friendly.

Managers at the council's waste contractor, Ubico, hope the move will make 'significant savings' in the sweeper's maintenance and operation, when compared to conventional sweepers.

Norman MacRae, cabinet member for environment, said: “This is a fantastic idea and we will be examining the benefits of running this machine closely through the trial.

“We are considering a range of initiatives in the face of the real prospect of climate change and it is important that all available options are carefully considered.”

In June, councillors declared a climate emergency and have organised new initiatives to deal with the issue, including setting up a single use plastics working party.

Witney Town Council has also made the declaration and last Sunday hosted a public meeting aimed at tackling climate change in the area.
