WANTAGE'S LEGO Expo attracted 7,000 visitors in its first week, after returning for a fourth year with a theme of ‘past, present, and future’.

Thousand more people are expected at the town's Vale and Downland Museum, where a selection of creations by professionals and the public are on show for a month.

A charity mosaic, STEM-themed workshops, and imaginative models from local residents, schools pupils and professionals alike are some of this year's highlights.

The initiative began in 2016 with a two week expo that saw more than 700 people attend, doubling the museum’s usual visitors.

Since then, it has expanded dramatically, and saw at least 10,000 visitors last summer, according to the museum.

But Expo Co-ordinator Sam Adamson said this year's event has proved even more popular.

He explained: "So far we have been really busy - we had 7,000 visitors last week and all the workshops we have been running have been selling out.

Oxford Mail:

"It's all been going great, everyone has been enjoying it and it has been really fun to run."

The exhibition – which began on July 27, runs from 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, until August 31 – contains a mixture of community submissions, large professional models and various LEGO-themed activities.

Public submissions are displayed among the museum's permanent exhibits.

Among them are favourite building sets – like Pippa Allen's Taj Mahal – imaginative collaborations, and flights of creative fancy from members of the public who have loaned their work to the museum.

Professional models, such as a LEGO castle and the Eiffel Tower, are also on display, while local toy shop ‘The Toy Planet’ have also supplied Lego scenes for the Squires Gallery.

Meanwhile, local Year 7 pupils from King Alfred’s Academy have a 'diorama of the Battle of Hastings' made entirely out of LEGO on display, as well as stop-motion films produced by pupils at Stockham Primary School, Fitzwaryn School, and Wantage C of E Primary School.

Museum curator Suzie Tilbury added: “We’re thrilled to have the Expo back for another year.

"LEGO is a toy that people of all ages can enjoy, and this is one of the most popular events at the Vale and Downland. It’s great to see people’s own submissions and this is what makes the Wantage LEGO Expo unique."

"This year we have more LEGO activities, expect even more visitors, and look forward to the best Expo yet."
