AN ENTIRE department of Ruskin College has resigned after tutors were made redundant.

Ruskin College's University College Union (UCU) said the social work team gave their notices on Friday after the four redundancies were announced.

It claimed there had been ‘continued mismanagement and chaos’ and that staff had been told not to talk to the press.

The UCU added: “The social work programme has long been considered the ‘jewel in the crown’ at Ruskin given it is by far the biggest programme at the college and given its national reputation in the social work profession.

"Tutors believe the quality of the programme will now rapidly deteriorate given the proposed changes to teaching by the management team.”

Ruskin College confirmed that it had accepted the resignations of the three members of the social work team.

A statement said the reason was a ‘matter for the individuals’, but added: “Ruskin College refutes any assertion of mismanagement and chaos within the College as well as any unprofessionalism alleged by disgruntled staff.

"Further, the College can confirm that it has not gagged any member of staff at the College and that the College readily accepted all resignations without condition."

It continued: “The College looks forward to replacing staff who have resigned and to build on their hard work to ensure that the social work programme can flourish at the College.”
