FIREFIGHTERS managed to free a driver from their car after it crashed into a tree on a country road.

Crews from Witney Fire Station and Rewley Road Fire Station were called to reports of a car colliding with a tree on the A361 between Banbury and Chipping Norton on Friday.

On arrival, crews found that the car was on its side trapping the driver and had to close the road for about an hour.

Luckily, they were quickly able to stabilise the vehicle, making it safe, and released the driver.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are now reminding drivers to take note of the changeable weather conditions and drive accordingly.

Firefighters also scrambled to an incident in an Oxfordshire village last Thursday.

Crews were called from Banbury Fire Station, Hook Norton Fire Station and Bicester Fire Station to tackle a fire involving 30 tonnes of bailed straw and several hundred metres of stubble on fire in two adjacent fields near Banbury.

A 4x4 from Banbury and a water bowser from Hook Norton were also sent to the blaze.

Using the 4x4 vehicle to damp down the burning stubble, crews concentrated on dealing with the main stack of burning straw to prevent it spreading to buildings and equestrian areas, using both the landowner’s machinery and fire service vehicles.

The cause is believed to be accidental and the fire service says that even though it has rained recently in the county, the conditions are still dry enough for fires to start easily and spread quickly.

They encourage everyone not to have bonfires during this 'dry and busy' season.
