THE shadow communities secretary visited an Oxford business yesterday, as part of a trip to learn about the city's approach to the climate crisis.

Labour's Stephen Morgan came to Osney Mead's OXWASH to discuss how the city's communities, local businesses, and council are working together.

Oxford Mail:

The business is Oxford’s first cycling laundry – set up by Oxford student Kyle Grant at the end of 2017 – and allows Oxford residents a sustainable solution to other laundrettes as their clothes are collected and delivered by bike, and the products used are environmentally friendly.

This month it is setting out to become the country's first laundry to use water reclamation, after taking steps to limit plastic pollution.

Praising OXWASH, Mr Morgan said: "Oxford has a proud record around tackling the climate emergency and is clearly doing some really fantastic things."

Mr Grant, 28, said he hopes to reuse 95 per cent of water within a couple of months, and that he is aiming to make the company the 'Amazon of washing' by expanding their ideas into other industries.

Oxford City Council’s Cabinet Member for Zero Carbon, councillor Tom Hayes, added: “ In Oxford, we have several pioneering companies headed up by young entrepreneurs taking the diesel out of delivery.

Oxford Mail:

"OXWASH’s cycling business benefits workers’ health and the environment, while also achieving the right kind of economic growth, without choking the county’s roads.

"It’s great, too, to have a clean and recycle service for plastic takeaway containers coming to Oxford in a bid to promote recycling.”
