A HEADTEACHER experienced the other side of GCSE results day as he endured a nervous wait to find out how his daughter fared.

Rob Shadbolt, of Wood Green School in Witney, is used to congratulating and comforting dozens of pupils on results day, but this year his main concern was 16-year-old Ella.

Fortunately, the teenager was one of the stars of the 140-strong cohort, achieving eight grade 9s and two grade 8s, to the 'relief' of her dad.

Ella said: "I woke up and it sunk in that it was results day. Every year you watch people go in and suddenly it's you, but I'm just pleased to have them now."

The Witney resident is set to study biology, chemistry and maths at Wood Green's sixth form and wants to eventually study medicine.

Mr Shadbolt was mostly on parental rather than teaching duties yesterday, but the headteacher and his colleagues were particularly pleased to see 41 per cent of students achieve grade 5 or above in English and maths.

Deputy headteacher, Ian Goddard, revealed the number was 'well above' the school's target, adding: "Our initial analysis suggests that student progress in both maths and English has been outstanding.

"These tougher exams are difficult and we are delighted with the way Wood Green students have responded."
