THE owners of a pub hit by noise complaints and a poor hygiene score have said they will have to cut opening hours by three days a week after being ‘completely overwhelmed with demands’ on their time.

The Isis Farmhouse’s owners blamed an ‘unprecedented amount of attention from numerous departments of Oxford City Council’ for its closure from Monday until yesterday.

It will reopen today following the recent requests but will shut again between Monday and Wednesday until further notice.

The brief closure follows a tumultuous period for the pub near Iffley Lock.

Two residents who live nearby have asked the city council to review the pub’s premises licence and it was given a food hygiene rating of zero – the lowest possible – after the authority inspected it in July.

In a statement on Facebook, owners Adrian Burns and Noreen Cullen said: “We have recently received an unprecedented amount of attention from numerous departments of Oxford City Council.

“Together with a campaign organised by our neighbour to encourage as many people as possible to make complaints about our operation, we have been completely overwhelmed with demands on our time.”

They continued: “As a result, we regretfully will have to close the pub from Monday to Wednesday until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope to see many of you here from Thursday to Sunday.”

The pub’s owners took over in 2017.

They have hosted many events, including the Oxford Psychedelic Society’s Oddball Festival.

It is understood that, although just two people have formally complained about the pub, many more are dissatisfied about the way it is being run.

Concerns about the noise created by pubgoers in the early hours is one problem, along with the owners’ desire to stay open later.

Oxford City Council said any comments about the way the pub is being run will not be made publicly available for the time being.

The city council said those comments will only be available in a report that will be heard at a licensing hearing.

The date of that has not been set. A consultation into the Isis Farmhouse’s licence will end on September 11.

Complainants have said they have been irritated by ‘loud and unlawful fireworks’ that have been released ‘late at night’.

They also allege they have been subjected to ‘excessive noise disturbance’.

However, on its Facebook page during its short closure, support poured in for the beleaguered venue.

One supporter said: “The Isis is so much more than used to be. You have transformed what was a nice pub in a nice location to a fantastic venue with a greatly enhanced offer which makes the location so much more appealing too.”

Another added: “Love the Isis pub, totally unique. So sorry to hear you’re having troubles.”
