A FORMER drug addict has set up a charity with the aim of renting out a property in Oxford for former drug users on the road to recovery.

Eddie Cobb, 28, from Littlemore, said she needed drug rehabilitation treatment after becoming an addict six years ago.

Now no longer using drugs, she has established the ADAPT (Addicts are People Too) charity to raise funds to rent out a home for people who find themselves in a similar position.

Mother-of-two Ms Cobb said: “I was never homeless and I was lucky as my parents paid for me to go abroad for treatment but not everyone can do that.

“ADAPT will offer supported housing to those who have come out of rehab and those who have completed detox and want to remain abstinent.

Oxford Mail:

“Our plan is to rent the first property before we buy. There is little such accommodation available, and a huge demand.”

Ms Cobb said the charity’s vision was to help residents return to work through developing their skills, help residents, sustain their drug abstinence and help them repair relationships and stronger family bonds.

The charity’s vision involves renting a five-bedroom property in Oxford and is hoping to raise £18,000 through crowdfunding and other donations to pay the rent.

Ultimately the charity aims to buy a property but would rent one first.

Ms Cobb said she has been in touch with the city council to alert them to the charity’s proposal. She has also applied to the National Lottery for a grant.

The charity is now seeking referrals from agencies, charities and self-referrals.

Its website said: “ADAPT offers supportive, comfortable, non-judgmental, safe, sober and clean housing to those wanting to rebuild their lives without illicit substances.

“We are here for those who have been through primary and secondary care in rehabilitation units or those who are looking for an abstinent environment. "We offer one to one support to the residents, a structured 12-step course as prescribed by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. "House meetings are held on a weekly basis to ensure service users are given the opportunity to share their views with staff and each other.”
