A DRIVER who died in a crash near Oxford has been named as Michael Mitchell.

The 46-year-old, who lived in Culham near Abingdon, fatally crashed into trees in Garsington last month.

His silver Kia Sportage came off the road shortly before midnight on August 30, in front of a house in Lower Road, and landed on its roof.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital but died of his injuries on September 6.

Mr Mitchell's inquest was opened at Oxford Coroner's Court yesterday.

Oxfordshire coroner Darren Salter said Mr Mitchell had been the only person inside the car that night.

He was described in court as a labourer, who was born in Oxford.

Mr Salter said: "The car left the road, believed to be [travelling] at a high speed, and hit a tree. It came to a rest on its roof."

Mr Mitchell was formally identified by his mother, the court heard.

The cause of Mr Mitchell's death was found to be a traumatic brain injury.

All three emergency services attended the collision in an attempt to save him, and police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who might have dash-cam footage.

A tribute to a Michael Mitchell, who died on September 6, was shared in the Oxford Mail's notices page on Wednesday.

It paid respects to a 'much-loved son and a loving brother' who had three children, who will be 'greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.'

Another tribute, posted on this paper's website, said: "RIP lovely man."

A full inquest date was set for February 20.

Anyone with information about the collision itself has been asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 43190268765, or make a report online.
