NO Oxford United fans received orders stopping them from attending football matches last season.

New figures from the Home Office show no banning orders were handed out to U's supporters during the 2018/19 campaign, down from four the previous year.

But the number of United fans arrested increased on the previous season, rising from five to eight.

It is the first time since 2014/15 that no new banning orders were given to U's followers and a club spokesperson welcomed the statistics.

He said: "The club tries to create a safe atmosphere at all games, home and away, and we are very pleased at the news."

Six people were subject to banning orders carrying over from before the start of 2018/19, with the measures generally lasting up to five seasons.

Four of those were aged between 18 and 34, while two were in the 50 to 64-year-old category.

Of the eight arrests, five were at home, while two occurred at away matches and one was at a 'neutral' location.

Four United fans were arrested for public disorder and three for violent disorder, while one was for a pitch incursion.

Despite the increase, it is a notable drop on the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, when there were 22 and 15 arrests made respectively.

Notable flare-ups in those campaigns include the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area final second leg clash with Millwall in February 2016, when eight men were arrested, and United's visit to rivals Swindon Town one year later.

Nine Swindon supporters were subject to banning orders last season, although no new measures were handed out.

Championship side Stoke City received the most new orders in the top four divisions, with 46, while the 71 Newcastle United fans subject to the measures was the highest overall.
