A house fire believed to have been caused by a tumble dryer prompted a warning from Oxfordshire's fire service.

Three engines from Slade Park, Abingdon and Rewley Road fire stations raced to the scene of a house fire in South Oxfordshire at around 9.30pm on Saturday night (December 2).

When they arrived at the property in Berinsfield crews were met with a well-developed fire on the ground floor, with heavy smoke building throughout the property.

Incident Commander, watch manager Paul White, said: "Thanks to the swift actions of the homeowners, who closed the internal doors, as they were exiting the property as quickly as possible, after they were alerted by working smoke alarms, there were no injuries and the fire was contained.

"An early call to 999 allowed for the swift attendance of the Fire Service, to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible. These quick actions, unquestionably helped to save the property from far more significant damage.

"The fire is believed to have been caused by a tumble dryer, and this serves as a timely reminder to check your white goods in your home and test your smoke alarms to ensure they are working correctly."

Crews wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the fire using high pressure hose reels, and cleared the property of smoke using positive pressure fans.

On Facebook, the fire service thanked neighbours who rallied around to look after the homeowners and firefighters.

They said: "It was fantastic to see such great community spirit and all coming together at these difficult times."
