Sir - The city fathers of New England are much less tolerant of littering than we appear to be.
While travelling through Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont last month we were impressed by how clean and tidy were the towns, villages and countryside.
It is not surprising, for we saw discreet roadside notices re fines for littering: $50, $100, $250, $1,000, $5,000 and even $10,000 in one place. Old England, take heed.
