After reading your cycling correspondent James Styring's column (Oxford Mail, July 15) about the proposed 20mph speed limit in Oxford, I feel I must present an alternative point of view to his obviously biased one.

I fully agree with Cliff Harris in the same edition about the need for cyclists to have documentation.

They have had it too easy for too long.

Mr Styring should realise that this is the 21st century and the motor car is here to stay, whether he likes it or not. I am a cabbie, and therefore have a need to drive.

I find I don't have the time to amble around the city on foot or by bicycle as the 20mph supporters seem to have.

While I am in full agreement to having slower speed limits in obvious places such as outside schools, parks and busy shopping areas, I feel a blanket 20mph limit across the whole city is complete unnecessary.

Most of my clients, passengers, are either academics, business men or professional people who live in the real world with schedules to meet and appointments to keep.

This usually means having to catch planes, trains and buses.

If, after a journey through the city not exceeding 20mph, one of my passengers misses their connection and refuses to pay the fare, as is their right, I am sure that Mr Styring or one of his associates would gladly reimburse me!
