We all know that traffic in Oxfordshire is on a knife-edge.

It takes only one hiccup to throw large parts of the county into chaos.

So it was hardly a surprise that the influx of thousands of visitors to the Game Fair at Blenheim yesterday caused such widespread disruption on the roads.

What could have been done to avoid it? Probably not much.

The organisers appear to have done their best to draw up a travel plan, with the aid of police, the Highways Agency and local councils.

The truth is that while Blenheim is ideal for such a major event, the roads around it just can't cope with such an avalanche.

There was traffic chaos when the Game Fair was last held at Blenheim four years ago, and it was the same again yesterday.

The argument for holding it here is that visitors from far and wide bring millions of pounds into the Oxfordshire economy.

The downside is the huge cost suffered by people with no interest in it - those trying to get to work and go about their daily business.

In future, if it has to held here, there may be a case for delaying the start until Saturday, avoiding the clash with normally heavy Friday commuter traffic.

Otherwise, painful though it may be, it looks as if we shall just have to grin and bear it.
