World Championships in Austria last Sunday with a silver medal to his credit, writes Mike Rosewell. Gander was the cox of the British men's junior coxed four.

After changing their start in between their heats and final, they really gave the favourites, Germany, a run for their money.

Britain even led by some inches at half way. The Germans then came through, but Gander's crew held off the fast finishing Ukraine for the silver.

Andrea Dennis and Laura Greenhalgh from Oxford were in the women's senior lightweight quad and reached their final after a good repechage win.

In a tight final, Britain were third at half way, but just slipped out of the medals to fourth in the run-in.

The men's junior eight, with Abingdon's Fearghus Raftery involved also found the final tough and finished fifth.

City of Oxford's young women's junior four, racing for England in the Home Countries International in Cardiff, finished third in their race.

They gained valuable points which went towards England winning the women's junior section of the competition.

The City crew of Cloe Seal, Holly Holden, Claudy Carnegie and Bess Drohan are all still one or two years younger than the junior age limit - quite a prospect for the future.
