An evening of baroque is the perfect wind-down for a summer's day, and the Adderbury Ensemble's programme of baroque classics at the Holywell Music Room last Saturday ticked all the right boxes. Established 22 years ago, the ensemble oozes style, elegance and finesse from every pore, imbuing every piece with the kind of maturity and sophistication you would expect from musicians who enjoy an exceptional rapport with each other and with their audiences. The rather parochial-sounding name is misleading; the group may have emerged from this North Oxfordshire village, but it is now one of the country's leading chamber ensembles, performing regularly throughout Britain and Europe.

The programme trod a fairly safe path, weaving its way through the delights of Handel, Bach, Pachelbel, Corelli and Vivaldi. The ensemble was joined by violinist David Le Page, whose virtuosity and artistry added a touch of magic to the solo parts. This was particularly noticeable in Bach's Violin Concerto in A Minor, which introduces some wonderfully expressive moments for the solo violinist, and Le Page responded with sensitivity and subtlety.

Handel modelled his concerti grossi on those of Corelli, so it was appropriate that a sample of each was included in the programme, demonstrating how these composers moved to a five-movement pattern, away from the three favoured by Bach, Albinoni and Vivaldi. Graceful adagios rubbed shoulders with vivacious and bustling adagios, allowing the ensemble to show off its technical mastery and versatility. Pachelbel's Canon was, unsurprisingly, a tour de force; a perfect study, this, in sustained power, fluency and eloquence. And finally there were the Spring and Summer movements from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, with the performers clearly relishing the composer's melodic and rhythmic inventiveness.

Sadly, this was the final concert in this year's Summer Series, but the Sunday morning coffee concerts continue to the end of September, at the Holywell Music Room and Magdalen College Auditorium (details on www.coffeeconcerts.com).
