Oxfordshire's waste recycling centres will no longer stay open late on Thursday nights.

Previously, the seven centres managed by Oxfordshire County Council stayed open until 8pm every Thursday from April through to September.

Councillor Pete Sudbury, deputy leader of Oxfordshire County Council with responsibility for climate change, environment and future generations, said: "We realise this decision will disappoint some people but unfortunately it is not financially viable to keep it going.

"However, users should remember that all of our household waste recycling centres will remain open from 8am - 5pm seven days a week, 362 days a year, to meet everyone’s waste and recycling needs."

This change is a result of the financial strains faced by Oxfordshire County Council in providing waste management services.

Councils can no longer charge for the disposal of small quantities of DIY waste.

Meanwhile costs have doubled for disposing of persistent organic pollutants, often found in upholstered furniture, after these materials were banned from being placed in landfill.

These changes equate to a £1 million annual increase in costs, compelling the council to find savings elsewhere.

Full details of the county’s household waste recycling centre sites and the services available can be found on Oxfordshire County Council’s website.

The Waste Wizard tool and kerbside collections services offered by Oxfordshire’s city and district councils also provide options for waste recycling.
