A councillor is urging customers not to throw litter on to neighbouring streets after buying fast food from a new McDonald's fast-food restaurant.

David Rouane shared pictures on Facebook of cups, paper bags and cartons all found within a 10 metre stretch of Station Road in Didcot.

The fast-food giant opened a new restaurant at the town's Orchard Centre in January.

Mr Rouane, who is ward member for Didcot North East, said: "The blame for this litter lies mainly with the customers.

"They are the ones who choose to drop litter rather than put it in the bin which is only a few metres away.

"However, the reason why you see so much McDonald's litter compared to other shops is, firstly, that they do use a lot of wrapping with each item being individually wrapped and, secondly, that their food is presented in a way which makes it easy to eat whilst walking in the street rather than sitting down."

Mr Rouane said he has had difficulty getting a response from McDonald's, but has texted the mobile number which they publicise for orders with the pictures of the litter and invited them to join in one or more of the upcoming community litter picks.

He added: "We care about our town and lots of people work hard to make it look good. We want to welcome McDonald's, and the other new shops opening in the town, into this family."

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “At McDonald’s, we strive to be a good neighbour in the communities we serve and take our responsibility around litter very seriously.

"That’s why for over 40 years, McDonald’s restaurant teams, including Orchard Centre, carry out daily litter patrols in local communities, collecting all litter not just McDonald’s branded packaging.

"We encourage any customer to inform our crew members of litter hot spots, which we can look to include in future litter patrols wherever possible.”
