SCORES of junior athletes from across the county recently descended on Bicester to compete in the sixth annual junior triathlon.

There were 176 young people, aged eight to 18, representing their school or sports club at the event, organised by Bicester Blue Fins, and held in the grounds of Bicester Community College.

The event, part of the British Triathlon South East Region children's series, saw competitors swim, cycle and then run to secure a place on the podium.

Oxford United star Adam Chapman presented winning trophies to individuals and Woodstock Primary School, which picked up the junior school title.

One of the organisers, Rose Todd, said: “Some of the local children — were doing the event for the first time. They put in excellent performances and were mixing it with more seasoned athletes.

“Triathlon is a tough event and it is heartening to see the 'can do' attitudes of the competitors.”

Volunteer Rachel Faulkner, Bicester Vision partnership manager, said: “This is a fantastic event and Bicester is proud to host it.

“At a time when we are told that so many of our children are risking health problems as a result of obesity, it is wonderful to see so many young people taking part in what is a pretty demanding event.”
