A FORMER teacher at Peers School in Oxford has been banned from the classroom for two years for serious professional incompetence.

Denise McKillop was taken to the General Teaching Council over concerns she failed to meet required standards in subject knowledge, lesson planning, record keeping, marking, student learning and progress and classroom management.

Today, a GTC hearing found against her in four of the six areas.

Allegations about her failures in record keeping and student progress were dismissed.

Ms McKillop taught humanities at the Littlemore school – which became the Oxford Academy in September last year – between September 2002 and August 2007.

The panel said her teaching had fallen seriously short of the standards required of a competent teacher. Concerns were identified in 2005 but, despite support and guidance, there were still significant question marks about Ms McKillop’s ability by the end of 2006.

Panel chairman Sarah Bowie said: “We’re concerned you have shown no understanding or insight into your failings, actions or your lack of competence.

“There’s a risk that pupils’ knowledge, education and attainment could be affected.

“You have, at no time, acknowledged that you have been at fault or been able to satisfy us that you have the insight and ability to teach competently.”

The panel imposed a two-year prohibition order, meaning Ms McKillop will be forbidden from teaching in any maintained school or non-maintained special school in that period.

She will be eligible to apply to re-register in two years’ time.

Ms McKillop has 28 days to appeal.
