Administrators for the struggling Tootsies restaurant chain have shut 10 restaurants — including its venue at the Oxford Castle complex — with the combined loss of 200 jobs.

BDO was appointed to oversee the chain, which includes Dexters restaurants, after parent company Clapham House withdrew financial support.

Administrators have already sold 11 of the chain's 21 outlets to rival operator Giraffe, which they said had safeguarded 278 full-time and part-time jobs.

Shay Bannon, BDO business restructuring partner, said: "It is unfortunate that, due to the economic climate and difficult trading conditions, a significant number of restaurants were loss-making, which threatened the viability of the whole group."

Other Tootsies outlets closed in Chiswick, Putney Wharf, Richmond, Wimbledon, Brighton and Hemel Hempstead.

Dexters outlets closed in Manchester, Milton Keynes and Clapham.
