The news that Marston Royal British Legion club has been given a two-month stay of execution is most welcome.

But it is most certainly not the end of the road.

The club owed the taxman more than £50,000 and, according to chairman Derrick Lancaster, the future of this institution is very much on the line.

The taxman has told the club it will be liquidated if managers cannot provide a guarantee it has enough cash to pay off its debts. HM Revenue and Customs is not in the business of making idle threats.

So far, the club has amassed £10,000 from donations, but it still needs another £42,000.

These are tough times. If ever there was a time for the much-feted Dunkirk spirit, it is right now.
