If you are looking for an unusual handcrafted Christmas gift that will delight and surprise, the Garden Gallery of the Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock, is where you should be heading. Until the end of the year members of the Oxfordshire Craft Guild are displaying their work, which rincludes silk scarves, jewellery and pottery, turned wood, needlecraft and embroidered pictures.

The quality of the work on show is attested to by the fact that each year a piece is selected for the Fletcher Prize, and at the end of the show is added to the Oxfordshire Collection of Contemporary Craft at Abingdon Museum.

The prize was won by potter and sculptor Cookie Scottorn (pictured above) from East Hagbourne, whose Dragon Planter, was praised for its originality of design and skill of craftsmanship.

Other pieces that display flair and originality include Claire Fyfe Jackson’s stunning hand-beaten silver necklace created in the shape of a lily. This lovely piece would be treasured by anyone lucky enough to receive it as a gift.

Amanda Hislop’s textile pictures are beautiful too, as are Barbara Shaw’s. Both women have created atmospheric scenes that celebrate nature, on silk and fabrics, which are exquisitely worked by hand and machine. The more you look at them the more you see as the lighting in the room highlights the golden threads they have used.

The chairman of the Guild, Richard Shock, is showing his skilfully turned wooden bowls and plates and a lovely collection of hand-crafted wooden toys.

More than 30 members and makers, are displaying their work in this show, which will continue to evolve and change as goods purchased are replaced with other pieces.

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. Entrance is free and refreshments are available in the café.
