WHAT good news it is that Oxford will have a permanent community radio station next year.

The five-year licence granted to OX4 FM by Ofcom is a massive opportunity for the city.

OX4 FM will be run by the community, for the community. It will provide a sounding board for people to talk about local issues.

It will also play music from across the board — as opposed to other commercial radio stations which have to aim for a particular demographic.

The station has already proved it has a loyal audience, with three short-term pilot broadcasts attracting thousands of listeners.

But in order to fulfil its potential the station needs people to give up their time and money.

OX4 FM will add massively to Oxford’s cultural life, and we should support it where we can.
