OXFORD’S first Christmas Day bus service attracted a “reasonable number” of passengers, Stagecoach said tonight.

The company ran its Route 1 buses almost hourly from Blackbird Leys to the city centre on Friday.

Commercial manager Robert Williams said: “We are pleased to have been able to provide the opportunity for people in Blackbird Leys and Cowley to get about, with a reasonable number of passengers travelling.

“While we don’t ever expect to be running lots of buses on this day, we have had requests for Christmas Day services to other places and are keeping an open mind about whether or not to do something similar again next year.”

He added: “We don’t have an exact figure on passenger numbers yet, but the report from the driver said some people used the service.”

Passenger Fortune Maseko, 39, from Greater Leys, caught the bus to see a friend in the city centre. He said: “It was very important to see him that day so I was glad the bus was running. Taxis on these days can be very costly so I think it’s a good idea.”
