The River Thames and its tributaries in the Oxford area were this afternoon put on flood watch.

The alert - the lowest issued by the Environment Agency - includes areas between Wolvercote down to and including Radley.

Sarah Hale, flood warning duty officer, said: “These flood watches have been issued because river levels are rising due to the rainfall overnight, which could result in flooding of low level land and roads in some areas.

"We are not anticipating property flooding from rivers at this stage, and the next few days will remain relatively dry so river levels should drop again.

"The recent weather conditions should serve as a reminder to people that they can sign up to our free Floodline Warnings Direct service by calling our Floodline on 0845 9881188, or visiting our website www.environment-agency.gov.uk."
