FAMILIES got up close and personal with a few feathered friends at Science Oxford today.

Bird expert Rod Smallman took seven owls, ranging from a tawny owl to a Bengal eagle owl, to the St Clement’s Street centre for a special education event.

About 100 people attended the two owl sessions where they learned more about the creatures and got to stroke some of them.

Ollie Richards, from Summertown, took his three-and-a-half-year-old twin sons, Harry and Samuel, along.

The family couldn’t stay for a whole session but were given a sneak preview.

He said: “It was absolutely brilliant. For the whole 20 minute car journey home it was all they talked about. They said they were cute, sweet and weeny. The one they really liked was the eagle owl. They were absolutely in awe of that thing.”

Museum head of public engagement Dominic McDonald said it was the second time Mr Smallman and his owls had visited the centre.

He said: “It was terrific. We knew from last time it was going to be good.”
