The wintry weather put paid to another fixture as the Worcester Head was cancelled last weekend.

The next scheduled event which invariably gets large support from Oxford-based clubs will be the Reading Head on March 6.

Reading has not been lucky with the stream problems in recent years, but hopefully the event will go ahead, since this year, it is expected that Oxford’s Boat Race crew will be involved, something they did regularly in the past.

More recently, Oxford have been absent, having two private fixtures on the Tideway in the run-up to the Boat Race.

It has become more difficult over the years to get British based clubs to race head-to-head fixtures with the Oxford and Cambridge crews.

This, and, one might suggest, less money in the Boat Race coffers, means that Oxford will have just one Tideway fixture, against Leander on March 20.

Cambridge have two fixtures scheduled, one against Molesey on March 2 and one against a Czech eight three days later.

The financial situation may also have been involved in the decision to have both the Oxford and Cambridge Trial Eights on the same day in December.

The announcement of the Boat Race crews and weigh-in, will be held at the Glaziers Hall in Southwark next Monday.

Whether the crew weights on March resemble those on Boat Race day on April 3 is another matter.
