It is difficult to know what to make of the endless argument over social services spending in Oxfordshire.

The Government claims that it has been generous in its cash handouts and the county council is responsible for any cuts.

The council says it has been forced into making cuts and accuses the Government of consistently underfunding social services.

So who is right?

We were no clearer yesterday when, in a debate in the Commons, a Tory MP and Lib Dem MP blamed a Labour minister, who blamed the Tory and Lib Dem county council.

While the politicians wrangle, the effects are being felt at the sharp end, by some of the most vulnerable people in our society - the elderly, the handicapped and children.

Too many people, who should be receiving care, are having to fend for themselves or seek help elsewhere.

Is no-one in authority able to get a grip of things, tell us what is going on and sort it out?
