Oxford police have pledged to crack down on any football hooliganism at a derby between Oxford United and Swindon Town on December 8.

More than 100 Thames Valley Police officers will be on duty during an operation, overseen by Oxford area commander Ch Supt David McWhirter.

After trouble flared at November 30's Oxford v Lincoln match, police are determined there will not be a repeat performance.

About 20 spectators invaded the pitch and ran towards Oxford fans in the North Stand.

Stewards prevented them reaching home supporters.

Ch Supt McWhirter promised he would do his utmost to ensure the next match was peaceful.

He said: "There have been minor flare-ups recently. I am keen to minimise any potential for trouble.

"That is why I have taken a robust approach to this weekend's match, both at the stadium and in the town.

"I am not prepared to tolerate a violent minority who seem intent on spoiling the game for others.

"This should be an enjoyable day for families, for the genuine football fans, and those who love the game.

"We will play our part in ensuring the occasion is not ruined by troublemakers."

Oxford United and Oxford police will have a series of new safety measures in place for the FA Cup second-round tie.

Police have asked the club to ensure no alcohol will be on sale in the North Stand to fans of either club.

But it will be available to United supporters in both the South Stand and Oxford Mail Stand.

Fifty extra stewards are being drafted in for the televised match, the first time the clubs have met in the FA Cup.

Along with Oxford police, officers from British Transport Police will be policing the rail route between Swindon and Oxford.
