The owners of an Oxford bar have withdrawn an application to extend its opening hours in the face of public opposition.

The Rendezvous, Pennyfarthing Place, wanted to stay open until 2am from Monday to Thursday, instead of closing at 11pm.

But several letters of objection were received, and the application was withdrawn before it was due to be considered by the city council's public entertainment and other licensing committee.

Tony Payne, a principal environmental officer, said: "Rendezvous's head office decided to withdraw the application before the meeting because of the objections which were raised."

Police opposed the extension on the grounds that it could create more disorder and violence. St Ebbe's New Development Residents' Association said revellers already parked illegally in nearby streets and caused disturbance when they left, and this would be made worse by extra hours.

Another Oxford bar has been given permission to extend its hours, despite fears of extra disruption to nearby homeowners.

Thirst, in Park End Street, can now stay open from 7pm to 2am, from Monday to Friday, instead of having to close at 1am.

Neither the police nor the fire service opposed the move, but one letter of objection was received by Cllr Colin Cook.

He told the committee local residents already suffered "intolerable" noise and their quality of life would be further damaged if the extension was approved.
