Champagne corks were popping today to mark the 100th birthday of an Oxford woman.
Lucy Spindler, who has lived at the Townsend House Residential Home in Bayswater Road, Headington, for the past seven years, had a party thrown in her honour by staff.
She was joined by her niece Kate Brandram and family, who live in Littlemore, and enjoyed a specially baked cake as she opened her traditional card from Buckingham Palace.
Mrs Spindler was born and brought up in Peterborough. She moved to Oxford and worked at the Old Radcliffe Infirmary. She met her future husband, Norman, and they married in 1937. The couple enjoyed travelling and spent many holidays abroad. Mr Spindler died shortly after they moved to Townsend House.
She was made a mascot for Oxford United some years ago and was presented with a signed football.
