A Good Samaritan was kicked in the head when he went to help a man who had been attacked.

He had seen the man being hit with a bottle beside a kebab van in High Street, Oxford, between 2am and 3am on Sunday.

But as the 22-year-old leaned over to help the injured man, the attacker kicked him in the face, breaking his eye socket and splitting his lip. He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, but has since been discharged.

Police spokesman Lucy Ferguson said: "This is all the more distressing as the man was attempting to help someone else when he was assaulted, and has suffered serious injuries as a result. "There would have been people at the kebab van who witnessed the assault and we would urge them to come forward as soon as possible.

"This man was trying to help the victim and did not get directly involved in the altercation between the offender and victim. We are treating this as an entirely unprovoked attack."
