One of the darkest moments in Oxford's history will be brought to life next month, with the staging of a play on the burning of the city's martyrs.

The gruesome episode, in which three 16th century Protestant bishops were put to death, will be reconstructed on the very spot the atrocity took place, in Broad Street.

The play has been written by two Oxford University students -- James Mumford, 21, an English student at Trinity College, and Patrick Malone, 34, a trainee Anglican priest studying at Wycliffe Hall.

The production will run from May 14-18 and will start in Broad Street, which will be closed off for the event, before moving into historic Durham Quad in Trinity College. The play will commemorate the burning of Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley and Hugh Latimer, who were executed on the orders of the Catholic Queen Mary.

Its name, Play the Man, is taken from Latimer's last words at the stake: "Be of good cheer, Master Ridley, and play the man."
