Oxford Hawks's junior sides had contrasting fortunes in the Mercian Home Counties League quarter-finals.

The under 18s were on the wrong end of an 8-1 drubbing from Beckenham on Sunday, while the under 14s secured a gritty 2-1 win at Guildford.

Hawks Under 18s qualified as winners of the North Division, but found Beckenham far too sharp in a one-sided encounter at Banbury Road North.

Hawks had several key players absent, but could have no complaints about the result.

By contrast, Hawks Under 14s played with huge commitment against Guildford.

Hawks conceded an early goal and, despite enjoying more of the play in the first half, turned around one down.

In the second period, Chris Cowan took command in midfield and the Oxford boys began to look more menacing up front.

Andrew Cole coolly put away a penalty flick and then pushed in the winner after Toby Roche had beaten three men on the bye-line to set up the opportunity.

Despite a late rally from Guildford, Hawks survived the last ten minutes to secure a famous victory which takes them through to finals day at Old Loughtonians HC in May.

In a game watched by more than 100 spectators, there were outstanding contributions for Hawks by Cowan, Simon Toms, Peter Instone and David Hibber.
