The search is on to find community heroes in Oxfordshire who have dedicated themselves to helping others.

The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Lady McLintock, wants to use her position to promote the cause of volunteering.

She is now helping to stage a service in celebration of voluntary work at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, later this year.

Lady McLintock wants volunteers from the local community to take centre stage.

She said: "I would very much like to do something to celebrate the enormous contribution made to the life of the community by those myriads of volunteers who give time, talents, energy and commitment to support their fellow residents."

The awards, dubbed Real People - Real Heroes, are being organised with groups such as the Oxfordshire Council for Voluntary Action.

Three categories have been set up: young people aged under 30, volunteers who have given dedicated service and volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution.

Each category is aimed at people who either work for an organisation or help their community.

For entry forms call 01865 251946. Entries must be submitted by July 27.

The cathedral service will be held on October 4, at 6pm.
