Greyhounds were on show at an Oxfordshire garden centre in the hope of finding a new home - but not at a racetrack.

Every dog has its day and each year more than 9,000 greyhounds retire from racing and seek a less hectic lifestyle. Many also give up the quest for the electric hare because of injury.

The Oxfordshire branch of the Greyhound Trust held a "Meet the Greyhounds " day at Nottcutts garden centre, Nuneham Courtenay and explained to people seeking a pet about the advantages of a former racing dog.

Maria Hamilton, from Alexander Close, Abingdon, cares for three retired greyhounds and a whippet and recommends them as pets: "People think they are hyperactive, aggressive dogs but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact they are loving lazy dogs."
