Relegated Oxford United have failed to meet virtually every target they've set themselves this season - but there's one last one they are desperate to achieve.

The players do not want to be landed with the stigma of being the first Oxford United team - and only the fourth professional English League club in the last ten years - to concede 100 goals.

Oxford's defence has so far shipped 90 league goals and they have four games left, starting at Bristol Rovers tomorrow.

So, to prevent the ton, they must not concede more than nine goals from four matches - just over two goals per game, which is what they are averaging at present.

Assistant manager Alan McLeary said: "The 100 goals is something we want to avoid, it's another issue we are looking at.

"We already talked about not wanting to finish on a losing run. We haven't been thrashed by anyone, but, with the odd exception, we have been losing game after game by the odd goal.

"We feel we're there or thereabouts and if we can keep the goals against column down to the bare minimum, then we've got a chance because we're always capable of scoring goals."

The irony is that, while United's players and management will be working hard to get a result against fourth-from-bottom Rovers at their Memorial Stadium tomorrow, that's the last thing most of their fans want.

They know that a Bristol Rovers victory will greatly increase the chances of deadly rivals Swindon going down with United.

"I don't think that's a consideration for us as players and staff," McLeary said. "All we can do is try to win the games that come along.

Manny Omoyinmi and Paul Powell took part in training yesterday and could be available, probably for places on the bench. But Robert Quinn is ruled out of the weekend's action, and fellow midfielder Paul Tait appears to have only a slim chance.

Rovers could have winger Richie Partridge and defender Robbie Pethick available again after hamstring injuries, and Aylesbury-born Christian Lee, a free transfer signing from Gillingham, may be available after recovering from a stomach strain.
