Thousands of people are expected to flock to outdoor events this summer as part of the Oxford Mail-sponsored Fun in the Parks 2001 programme.

The Mail is backing several high-profile events staged in parks around Oxford by Oxford City Council.

On May 7, 7,000 people are expected to attend MayFly in South Park, which will showcase the talents of young bands.

All the groups performing have been booked by Oxford's Zodiac venue, which is also laying on an alternative music tent.

On May 12 and 13, the Mail will be among the supporters of the Oxford Balloon Fiesta - which is expected to attract 60,000 people - alongside Fox FM and balloon operator Flying Pictures. The event is held in Cutteslowe Park.

Five thousand people are expected to attend the Oxford Canal Festival at the Aristotle Lane recreation ground on June 24. The event will have the support of British Waterways and is organised in conjunction with the boating community and residents.

Other events follow later in the year.
