Opponents of a planned McDonald's restaurant in Oxford will be holding a demonstration on Sunday.

Protesters leading a 'McNo!' campaign against the burger chain's plans for the former Carpenters Arms in Botley Road will be handing out pens and paper, inviting people to write their views on why they strongly object to McDonald's takeover of the former Morrells house, and these will be sent to the burger chain bosses.

Residents, who have already protested against the pub conversion, will also be asked to add their names to a petition against the company's plans to create a 'drive-thru' on the site. The company does not need planning permission to convert the pub into a restaurant, but would require consent from the Vale of White Horse District Council for a 'drive-thru'.

The McNo! protest has been organised by a campaigning community group in Oxford called No Spin which plans to field independent candidates in the coming elections. Its leader, Sigrid Shreeve, of Hill View Road, west Oxford, plans to stand in the Oxford West and Abingdon constituency, which MP Evan Harris holds for the Liberal Democrats.

Ms Shreeve, 39, a mother of two, has written to the police stressing that the demonstration, due to start at 11am, will be peaceful and not disrupt traffic at the busy traffic lights junction. She welcomed comments from people on the plan.

"As long as they don't say anything rude or libellous, we'll put them up for all to see along with our posters," she said.

"We intend to tie the comments on to the fence around the Carpenters Arms, and to remove them by the evening so we can send them to McDonald's with our petition."
