A support group for epileptics is facing a new struggle less than a year after it re-opened following cash cuts.

Oxfordshire Epilepsy Support Group is moving from Oxford United Supporters Club, where it meets once a month, because the football club is leaving the Manor Ground in Headington.

Publicity officer Chrissie James said the charity would be moving to rooms at the new Minchery Farm stadium, but the group feared many members could not get to the complex on the outskirts of the city unless it subsidised their taxi fares.

The problem comes ten months after organisers struggled to re-launch the group after losing financial support from the National Society for Epilepsy.

Ms James said: "We are concerned that the Greater Leys venue may be too difficult for our members, many of whom are unable to drive due to epilepsy.

"We hope in the future to re-start subsidising taxis for our members who require them, but as yet our funds are inadequate to finance this."

Because many of the 300 members live in the county's rural areas, Ms James said round trips to Oxford by taxi could cost up to £50 a time.

She said: "Some of the costs we have are quite enormous.

"We subsidised taxis for a Christmas party last year and it was very expensive.

"What would be great is if a taxi company offered to subsidise us - but that's unlikely to happen."

Oxfordshire Epilepsy Support Group was launched in 1988.

It was forced to close ten years later when the National Society for Epilepsy withdrew funding and decided to concentrate solely on research.

Ms James said: "We used to use their name for fund raising and all our publicity material had their logo, which we couldn't use any more. They paid for our advertising, leaflets and newsletters and we had to start from scratch without their logo.

"It took us a year to become an independent body and we have just got our charitable status."

The group, which meets on the last Thursday of every month, is now fundraising to help ease the situation.
