This year's Oxford League Turner Cup was won by Witney's John Hume at Eynsham Sports and Social Club.

In an entertaining final, he beat Alan Mander of New Club, who turned out to be the 'dark horse' of this event.

Predominantly a snoo- ker player, he chanced his arm in this billiards event, and came very close to winning it.

There was never more than ten points in it until the end when Hume suddenly found some form and made an 18 break followed immediately by an unfinished 24 to run out a 250-222 winner.

*There is the tighest of finishes in Division 1 of the Oxford League, with four teams tied on 36 points each, and only two more fixtures remaining.

Allthree leaders from last week lost, while champions Oracle won 2-1 to join Ashton, Rileys A, and Newtrim at the top.

Unfortunately Oracle have a bye in the final week and can only wait and hope, but the final run-in seems to favour Ashton.

Last week's leaders, Riley A, suffered their second successive 3-0 defeat, this week by second division winners Witney, who now cannot be caught.

Steve Mill (+110) beat Roger Coenen (+70) 150-117, Terry Cook (+50) beat Dave Morgan (+60) 150-140 and John Hume (+30) beat Warner Page (+100) 200-188.

Tomorrow night sees the semi-finals of The Oxford Times Cup at Cowley Conservative Club (7.15).

Draw: Simon Aries (Newtrim) v Martin Cone (Thame) and Bob Chivers (Newtrim) v Dick Hashman (Crown House).

League results: Eynsham 1, Oracle 2; Rileys B 1, Thame 2; Morris Motors 2, Ashton 1; Witney 3, Rileys A 0; Crown House 2, Newtrim 1; CCC A 4, New Club 2.
