Plans for a two-way cycle lane in a narrow street have been denounced as "barmy".

Sustrans, the charity creating cross-country cycle routes, wants to make Bicester town centre part of its Oxford to Winslow trail.

And to achieve this it has suggested that a two-way lane should be put down in The Causeway, which is already restricted to one-way traffic.

Sustrans' route from Oxford stops on the edge of the town at Bicester Village retail outlet centre.

After a gap in the town centre, the route continues again in Launton Road and on through villages towards Winslow.

Sustrans has suggested that the route would go over a footpath across Pingle recreation field and into Old Place Yard. It would then go run through Church Lane, along The Causeway and into Market Square.

But town and district councillor Norman Bolster said: "This is a barmy, hare-brained idea.

"You would have cyclists riding against the one-way flow. I cannot see why cyclists could not walk and push their bikes for the short length of The Causeway."

Councillors were also against any idea that the route should go into the Sheep Street pedestrian precinct.
