Oxford City's junior captain Stewart Hamilton caused quite a shock when he lifted the Berks, Bucks and Oxon junior winter medal matchplay title by beating England international Steven Lewton on his home course at Woburn.

Lewton, with a plus one handicap, drove the ball enormous distances in the final on the Dukes Course, while 17-year-old Hamilton, who plays off four, hit fairway after fairway.

After three-putting the 17th, Hamilton stood on the 18th tee with a one-stroke lead.

Lewton drove into a greenside bunker at the shortened 306-yard last hole.

Hamilton, who had never played Woburn before, drove and pitched to within ten feet of the hole and just missed his birdie putt.

Lewton, who exploded out to within four feet, then missed the putt that would have taken the final to extra holes.

Hamilton tapped in for a four-over-par 76 to claim the best victory of his golfing life by one stroke.

In the morning semi-finals, played on the Duchess Course, Hamilton beat Beaconsfield's Daniel Wasilowski by eight shots, while Lewton shot a 70 to beat Tadmarton Heath's talented Andrew Mason by 13 strokes.

*Narelle Ives, from Frilford Heath, finished a highly creditable third in the scratch competition at the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Junior Girls Championship at Temple GC.

Ives shot a gross 84 to finish behind Bucks golfers Kelly Knight (80) and Zoe Humphries (82) in the scratch event.

Anna Nash (Banbury) played eight under her handicap of 38 to take third place in the handicap section.

Nash, accompanied by Kate Turner (North Oxford) who shot 91-25=66, and Giverney Porter (Chipping Norton), 93-25=68, helped the Oxfordshire threesome to win the handicap team shield.

Samantha Round, of Tadmarton, played to her handicap of 12.
