Former Witney Town players Steve Jenkins and George Redknap notched the goals to give Banbury United the points in the first league meeting between the local rivals for 19 years.

Banbury had a strong wind behind them in the first half of Saturday's Dr Martens League Eastern Division clash.

And bizarrely, their first attempt came from their goalkeeper, Simon Tricker, whose wind-assisted drop kick, was tipped over the bar by his opposite number Tom King.

The gusting wind also played a part as Banbury took the lead in the spectacular fashion in the 15th minute.

With King well off his line, Jenkins smashed the ball high over the Witney keeper's head and into the back of the net.

Jenkins almost struck again before playing a part in Banbury's second goal.

His looping cross into the penalty area came off the back of a Witney defender's head and fell to Redknap, who shot past King from ten yards.

Jenkins volleyed another chance wide before Andy Keveren put Witney's first chance over the bar.

Witney came out fighting in the second half, and Keveren and Gary Swann both had half chances before both Jon Corbett and Tom Radcliffe were cautioned.

Witney continued to press forward. A free kick from Dominic Dunton and an overhead kick from Harry Burnley brought saves from the increasingly busy Tricker.

Witney finally pulled a goal back ten minutes from time when Steve Tavinor powered home a header from Keith Knight's excellent cross.

This set up an exciting finale, but it was Banbury who came closest to scoring again as Andy Wallbridge and Garry Harrison both brought excellent saves from King.
