THE disaster relief charity being set up by Oxfordshire County Council is a case of charity beginning at home.

During the 2007 floods, those who wanted to donate to victims in Oxfordshire had to send money to a national charity.

But because other areas were worse affected, there was no guarantee all the Oxfordshire money would be spent locally.

It would be wrong to force people only to give to the Oxfordshire charity if there is a repeat. But at least there is now a choice for donors about where they wish their money to go. It would be better all around, though, if we had no call on them in the future.
